Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, looks forward to our knock-out clash in the county competition.
It’s cup action for the Scarlet Runners on Tuesday evening as they return to one of their old
Western League stomping grounds.
Brislington’s Ironmould Lane stages a Somerset Premier Cup First Round tie and the last
time they ventured to that part of southeast Bristol, they went on to lift the trophy itself but
have not done so since.
That was a semi-final encounter in 2009, settled in extra time by a Matt Peters wonder strike,
the only goal of a hard-fought contest in a watershed season which also brought promotion
to the Southern League.
What the Robins would give for another goal on the road! Their last one came at Easington,
a deft first half lob from James Ollis, in the FA Cup on the last day of August and they’ve not
found the onion bag in five mostly fruitless away fixtures since.
There will be some familiar faces in the home line-up with the likes of Owen Humphries, Ben
Withey, Alfie Clark and the evergreen Dean Griffiths all current members of a Briz squad
who last term won promotion, via the play-offs, back to the Western League Premier
Division.
On top of that, they reached the final of the Premier Cup, going down 3-0 to Taunton in a
July showpiece held over from a fixture-congested campaign while the current season saw
them begin like an express train with five straight league wins and a hatful of goals.
Their form has dropped off somewhat since and Saturday’s 2-1 reverse at St Austell sees
them mid-table with seven wins and seven losses from fifteen.
The Second Round draw has already been made and, surprise, surprise, Tuesday’s winners
will be away to Bath City.
