Clevedon Town vs. Frome Town: Preview

Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, looks ahead to today's trip to the coast for another pre-season Somerset derby.

Pre-season friendlies come thick and fast now for 'The Scarlet Runners' with their next outing away to Western League Premier Division Clevedon Town on Tuesday evening.

With the Seasiders' own league campaign beginning as early as a week on Saturday, they have more warm-up games under their belts and, on the same day Frome were being put through their paces by Yeovil Town in front of an impressive turn-out of 810, Clevedon drew 1-1 at Western League Division One outfit Hallen.

A fourth place finish last term earned them a play-off berth where they succumbed 2-0 at Falmouth Town in the final and of course a little under twelve months ago, they put in a decent performance in the FA Cup at Badgers Hill, eventually going down 3-1 through a Jon Davies double and a stoppage-time clincher from James Ollis.

They play at the impressive Everyone Active Hand Stadium, their home since the early 90s following a move from town centre Teignmouth Road and Frome had the honour of meeting them in the first ever competitive game there, spoiling the party initially by going ahead through Paul Bernard before the Seasiders, who would romp away with the Western League crown that 1992-93 campaign unbeaten, came back to win 3-2.

It's a venue Danny Greaves will be more than familiar with, custodian there for possibly the most successful period in the club's long 144-year history.

A Southern League outfit for over two decades from 1993, the Robins last visited their Somerset rivals to battle for points towards the end of the 2010-11 promotion season where goals from Jamie Cheeseman, Josh Brigham and Ben Thomson secured a 3-1 success, propelling them to eventual play-off glory.

The 2024-25 Southern League fixtures are due out on Friday, and when they're at long last published, the big kick-off on August 10th will feel a whole lot closer.

Another cracking article Juppy - Wow , a crowd of over 800 for a friendly - Lots of Glovers' fans clearly made the short trip to 'The Hill.'. All good for the club's coffers. and Del & Teresa's holiday fund.
