Frome Town 0 - 0 Gosport Borough

Harrison Richards

Frome Town added another crucial point to the board, after being to a goalless draw by Gosport Borough at Badgers Hill.

Neither side managed to find a breakthrough in the match, but the Robins would have felt more aggrieved not to have taken more from the game after squandering countless opportunities.

Danny Greaves made two changes to the side that picked up a point away at Walton & Hersham on Saturday. Archie Ferris replaced Elliot Dugan up front, whilst Joe O’Loughlin returned to the side at right wing back, in place on the suspended Ethan Vaughan.

The hosts started brightly, controlling the opening exchanges. Despite dominating the opening 25 minutes, they failed to really test Adam Parkes in the Gosport goal, with their best chance coming in the 13th minute, when they won the ball high up the pitch, it fell the way of Rex Mannings, who, after some skill full play, worked the ball onto his left foot but dragged a shot wide.

The Boro’ began to grow into the contest and spurned a big opportunity in the 30th minute when Daniel Wooden got a fortunate break in the box, but snatched at his effort, sending it well wide.

The remainder of the half was fairly flat. On a difficult surface, both teams struggled to create many clear cut chances, a trend that continued into the second half.

The away side nearly got a lucky break just minutes into the half, when Warren Maidment completely misjudged a bouncing ball at the back, allowing Wooden to race through on goal, however he once again scuffed his effort wide of the post.

After weathering an early Gosport storm, the BA11 side began to reassert control in the match and nearly took the lead on the hour mark, when Albie Hopkins raced down the left before firing a shot that went just a whisker wide of the left hand post.

Three minutes later, Kyle Phillips was then called into action for the first time as Samuel Faniyan received the ball on the left but fired his effort straight at the keeper.

In the 69th minute after working the ball nicely in the box, Mannings had a chance to shoot on goal, but his effort flashed over the crossbar.

The game struggled to gain momentum in the second half, due to the stop start nature, largely down to the referees decisions, however the hosts did go close to snatching all three points in the 84th minute when Hopkins chipped a cross back to Sam Heal, who fired a shot that bobbled just wide.

It ended a stalemate at Badgers Hill, marking three consecutive home games without a goal, however the boss isn’t concerned and neither should you be as the result puts us just three points from safety, still with games in hand on teams around us.

Saturday is another huge clash against bottom of the league Marlow, and once again we’ll need your support to help push the team towards a much-needed victory.

A smaller crowd than usual (379), braved the arctic-esque weather conditions where an easterly wind chilled you to the bone/ cut you to the quick. Unfortunately, there wasn’t too much in the game to warm us Eskimos up in what was a rather dull, uninspiring game where solid defending and grim determination was the order of the day, Both back fives were excellent and even though we delivered cross after cross into their box, we won nothing – so credit to them for that. Archie had a frustrating night.

That’s not to say that there weren’t chances – there were, and Gosport had by far the two best ones, missing twice from six yards out! We had a couple of…
