Frome Town 0 - 1 Chertsey Town

Updated: 2 days ago

Frome Town fell to a fourth consecutive 1-0 defeat, as Chertsey Town put them to the sword at Badgers Hill.

A late first half strike from Oliver McCoy was enough for the Curfews to take three points back to Surrey, with the result putting them out of relegation trouble, whilst for the Robins, it leaves them languishing in 21st place.

Despite managing just 34 goals in the league this season, with Tiverton only scoring fewer, the BA11  outfit would have been hopeful to find the back of the net against the 2nd worse defence in the league, however they still came up short.

It was a nervy start to the game for Frome as Jack Mazzone nearly punished them in the first minute, latching onto a ball over the top before fortunately dragging his effort wide.

After that scare, Frome began to settle and fans around the ground thought they took the lead in the 15th minute when Sam Teale tapped home following a free-kick, but celebrations were halted by the linesman’s flag.

James Ollis then forced a solid stop from Joshua Strizovic six minutes later, after a burst down the right, he fired a sharp shot which was subsequently beaten away.

Then deja vu struck in the 32nd minute - Joe O’Loughlin broke down the left hand side and fizzed a cross in which Archie Ferris tapped home, only for the goal to be chalked off for offside once again.

Then disaster struck ten minutes later, as Matt Wood misjudged a ball over the top, McCoy allowed the ball to bounce before firing past Kyle Phillips.

Having only managed to pick up five points from losing positions all season, the sense of inevitability was hard to ignore when going behind that it would end in defeat was hard to ignore. Frome struggled to create clear chances after the break, though substitute Zak Drew had a decent opportunity in the 50th minute - his shot however, was struck straight into the ground and Ollis couldn’t direct the follow up on target.

Albie Hopkins then had a good chance ten minutes later, after receiving a ball inside from Teale, but after selling the defender, he failed to get his shot on target.

As the game wore on, it looked more likely the visitors would double their lead. They nearly did in the 89th minute following a defensive lapse, but Phillips came up big to deny them. Then deep into stoppage time, Chertsey surged down the right hand side and struck an effort across goal that somehow hit the inside of the post - somehow staying out - but it made little difference as Frome slumped to another league defeat.

Despite the poor run, the season is far from over, a trip to Swindon Supermarine beckons and will be a crucial factor in deciding our fate this season. Your support on the road has been fantastic all season and it will be needed once again, in a week’s time.

Well, I don't have (and won't have) a Facebook account and I can't really comment on the Facebook site as my wife for obvious reasons, and to be honest, most of the comments on there are pretty bland and predictable, with a few notable exceptions.

I used to love the old "no holds barred" forum, but that seems to have died a death, so thought I'd try on here.

I remember you and your bothers Geoff and John from the Frome Park Football Academy in the days when kids grabbed a ball, some jumpers and a bit of open space and arranged a game without a single parent, sponsor or named shirt in sight. Probably the best known graduate of…

It really feels now like the Grim-Reaper is closing in. Have we finally ran out of aces? So many opportunities over the season – and the team unable / not good enough to take them.

Today we made their keeper make just one save and a straight forward one at that. The similarity between this and the Hungerford & Wimborne games is depressing. What a time to start another losing streak.

We have hardly been out of the bottom four all season. Struggling Supermarine, second bottom in the form guide, looks our last chance for the three points we so desperately need. They have had a desperately difficult fixture list of late and will no doubt also see Frome as an…
