Frome Town succumbed to defeat against National League outfit Yeovil Town at Badgers Hill in their first home pre-season game.
A Ross Staley second half penalty wasn't enough to earn Danny Greaves side a positive result against the Glovers.
Regardless of the score, it was important to build fitness levels and test ourselves against a side two leagues above, who on the day, proved why they stormed to the National League South title last season.
The game saw all three new signings, Albie Hopkins, Jayden Nielsen and Marcus Day start, with all of them imposing themselves early on.
Despite an even opening 15 minutes, it was the visitors who opened the scoring through Morgan who surprised Kyle Phillips, converting directly from a corner.
The away side then doubled their lead, just seven minutes later, when Sam Pearson was played through, down the right hand side, and he made no mistake with the finish.
The away side did well to nullify the Robins of any threat for the rest of the half with their high press and solid structure making it extremely difficult ,
They even managed to add a third in the 43rd minute, this followed a loose pass from Joe Budd which Harvey Greenslade capitalised on, again making no mistake with the finish.
A fourth was added after a really well worked move down the left hand side which saw Greensalde turn from goalscorer to provider, as he rolled the ball into Morgan’s path who add his second and Yeovil’s fourth just before the break, firing past Phillips.
The second half was a similar story to the first, with Yeovil dominating the ball and Phillips being forced into a few good stops.
In the 52nd minute he denied Jordan Young before Matt Wood spectacularly denied Aaron Jarvis from the rebound, on the line.
Ten minutes later he made another top save, denying Jarvis from point blank range who must have thought at the time that it just wasn’t his day.
It took until the 75th minute but the home side finally had something to shout for as they were awarded a penalty following a foul in the box.
Substitute Ross Staley converted the spot kick to give Frome what they feel was a deserved consolation goal.
Yeovil however weren’t done yet as another mistake at the back saw Alex Whittle give Jarvis a chance to battle for the ball with the keeper, with the former coming out on top, heading into an empty net.
The result has to be taken with a pinch of salt, as pre-season is all about building fitness, team chemistry and experimenting.
We thank Yeovil for travelling and look forward to visiting Clevedon Town on Tuesday.
Don't miss the chance to secure your admission to our pre-season friendlies at home, starting with this week's match against county rivals Yeovil Town. Season Tickets can also be found on the Fanbase app and website!
There's a very good video of the game on Yeovil Town's Twitter / X site. Even in those couple of minutes you can see how much sharper / fitter / stronger full time training makes you? Our keepers had a few wobbles unfortunately under all that pressure.
Clevedon & Shepton will be much easier of course before another couple of stern work outs against Bath City & Swansea under 23's.
The crowd looked very healthy for a friendly - around 600 + I would estimate.
Hope to see all you regulars at Shepton Mallet on Saturday.
I must say also that I'm enjoying the the Frome Town podcast - 'Ronnie Rusher' - what a great name for a sprog!…
I think that the fans will see this result as 'expected' against full time professionals two tiers higher than us and clearly determined to get back into the football league proper. It's a throw away result, without expectation, which means very little in terms of our new season's prospects. Taunton Town came here last season, also two tiers above us and put six past us, but that didn't stop us having one of our best seasons ever as a club.
I'm sure we'll be too strong for both Clevedon & Shepton Mallet and things will return to winning ways.
I'm still a little concerned by the absence of any experienced strikers to replace Kane & Meaksie? What if Ollie g…
