Frome Town 3 - 3 Marlow

Frome Town were held to a frustrating draw at Badgers Hill against bottom of the league Marlow.

In a rollercoaster game, the Robins fought from two goals down to eventually take the lead, only to see all three points snatched away from them in the final 15 minutes as Harry Hoath equalised from a corner.

While the game provided a lot of entertainment for a neutral, it was perhaps one to forget for the Frome faithful, particularly the opening twenty minutes which saw a lacklustre display from the home side.

The BA11 side struggled in the midfield early on, hindered by the fact only one recognised midfielder, Alex Monks, started, despite Joe Budd and Callum Gould being on the bench, whilst up-front, the strike partnership of Archie Ferris and Elliot Dugan failed to click throughout the first half, all contributing to Frome’s early troubles.

The hosts were deservedly punished for their apathetic start, as a ball in the 5th minute was chipped into Naheer Nawaf’s path, who made no mistake clipping the ball over the on-rushing Kyle Phillips.

The feeling around the ground was rather flat following the goal, and things got even worse twenty minutes later, when Nawaf doubled his tally, rifling a powerful shot past Phillips after latching onto a clipped pass from Elijah Oladunjoye.

Although Frome hadn’t been completely outplayed, you could argue they were deservedly trailing due to their sluggish approach in the opening stages.

Just before Marlow’s second goal, Sam Heal had to depart through injury, replaced by Gould, he gave Frome a lot more bite in the middle and this helped them settle into the game.

Despite struggling to create clear-cut chances, Frome managed to pull a goal back on the half hour mark when Rex Mannings reacted quickly to fire a shot into the roof of the net following a corner.

Although it was a below par first half,, Frome nearly entered half-time level, as in the 39th minute Albie Hopkins won the ball high, before firing a ball across the box that was just out the reach of Eliott Dugan and wide of the mark.

Ultimately the hosts had to up things in the second half if they wanted to get anything from the game, fortunately that happened and Danny Greaves side came out revitalised, helped by half-time substitute James Ollis, who ran himself into the ground despite only just returning from an illness.

It didn’t take long for Frome to find themselves level, in the 59th minute, Albie Hopkins raced onto a through ball, keeping his composure inside the box and slotted past Harrison Rhone to level the score.

Moments later Hopkins struck again, after fantastic work from Ollis, who clipped a ball back-post, Hopkins brought it down before smashing home to complete the turnaround.

Due to the turnaround, the dreadful start had almost been forgotten about, however things wouldn’t be smooth sailing for the remainder of the game, as in the 75th minute a dangerous corner was headed home by Hoath, drawing the sides level again.

The remaining 15 minutes lacked real intensity, the visitors appeared content with a point, whilst Frome were unable to rediscover the spark that they had at the beginning of the half, meaning both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Attention now shifts to the Somerset Cup where we face off against Mendip Broadwalk, a chance for a spot in the semi-final and once again we’d love to see as many of you as possible supporting the lads at this stage of the competition.

Ramblings from The Hill.  ‘Danny Boy’.

When the final whistle blew on Saturday’s game against Marlow Town, it was difficult to separate the conflicting emotions that had been left dangling. Rather like a trapeze artist, slowly losing their grip on a hire wire swing, and realising there was no safety net, that would break their fall from grace. Was it a point gained after being two goals down, or two points lost after fighting back to lead with only about 15 minutes to go?  It would have been interesting to have been a fly on the wall in the home changing room after the game.

Fast forward to Danny’s after match interview:  What I love about Danny’s post-match reflections are…

On a day eleven degrees higher than Tuesday’s Ice age temperatures it was almost tropical at The Hill. It was also, supporters club, Gordon’s 80th birthday and he’s been doing the teas and coffees for seventy nine of them.

So, it’s two points from six, from two home games this week! On the one hand it’s a missed opportunity for sure. On the other, it’s two more points and we’re now fourth bottom and just 3 points from safety, in the short term at least!

The Jupster & Danny did warn us that Marlow wouldn’t be easy and how right they were.

I don’t know if we were overly confident or maybe fatigued – from Tuesdays game and a long run of two…
