Frome Town vs. Havant and Waterlooville: FA Trophy Preview and Ticket Info

Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, studies a cup clash that comes hot on the heels of the previous meeting.

Just a fortnight after that crushing Southern League encounter at Westleigh Park,

the Robins go head-to-head once more with Havant and Waterlooville, this time in

Somerset in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy.

Both sides have experienced mixed results since that 5-0 lesson; Havant repeated

the punishment days later by brushing aside struggling Marlow with another five-goal

salvo but last weekend, they were brought down to earth with a thump, going down

5-1 at Sholing, their first league defeat of the campaign.

Frome, on the other hand, have played just the once, that heartening and thoroughly

committed goalless draw against a buoyant Hungerford side who had plundered nine

goals themselves in their previous match.

This will be the Hawks' first ever visit to Badgers Hill and, while on paper it seems a

daunting tie, Dodge devotees can take encouragement from the Hampshire outfit’s

record on the road this season… just one win and that at Horndean in the county cup

and their last three Trophy campaigns have all ended abruptly at the first hurdle.

In contrast, this competition provided a number of highlights for the Robins last term

including battling through a club record FIVE rounds, a five-goal second half super

show at Bishops Cleeve, that dramatic shoot-out victory over National League South

Worthing, leading to a record crowd and another memorable occasion here against

Torquay.

Havant themselves possess a bit of Trophy pedigree, having TWICE reached the

semi-final stage with the most recent being in 2014 when neighbours Gosport

Borough pipped them over two legs to a grand day-out at Wembley.

Saturday’s winners will pick up a handy £2,450 from the prize pot and if level at the

end of normal time, the tie will go to straight to penalties.

After some disappointing results, the performance at Hungerford was a boost to

everyone at Badgers Hill and the mini-break from competitive action, coupled with

some intensive training sessions, may just be what the squad needs to jumpstart a

stuttering season.

This FA Trophy tie is something of a free hit for Danny Greaves’ charges and that

lack of pressure against opposition many would consider firm favourites could make

for an entertaining afternoon.
