Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, look forward to an encounter with a new opponent
For non-league fans of a certain vintage, Walton and Hersham is a name that conjures up
one of the greatest ever FA Cup shocks and with it, perhaps the darkest day in the illustrious
managerial career of one Brian Clough.
1973 had already been a momentous year for the Swans, having won the old FA Amateur
Cup in front of a Wembley crowd of 41,000 against Slough before they astounded the
football world the following season, winning an FA Cup replay 4-0 away at Brighton when
Cloughie was between stints at Derby and Leeds.
Those glory days quickly faded but in recent times, the Surrey-based club have enjoyed a
rapid rise up the pyramid. Only in 2021, they competed in Division One of the Combined
Counties League (Step Six) before three successive promotions took them up to Southern
Premier South where they finished a creditable seventh last term, missing out on a play-off
berth by just three points.
Knocking on the door of the play-off positions is also where you’ll find them currently but
after an electrifying start to 24-25, their form has dropped off. When they triumphed 2-1 at
Plymouth Parkway in early September, it was their FIFTH straight win as they hit top spot,
but they’ve not registered a three-point haul since.
Not to be confused with Walton Casuals, a club now defunct whom the Robins crossed
swords with in the 2018-19 campaign, Frome Town have never previously played Walton
and Hersham.
Both suffered late defeats on Saturday with the Swans going down to an eighty-eighth
minute winner in a 2-1 reverse at Winchester, providing the Citizens with their first home
league win of the campaign.
The Badgers Hill faithful, still reeling from the way Poole plundered the points, will be hoping
their side can follow suit on Tuesday evening. Without doubt, it will be another tough
encounter but on current form, these two teams are more closely matched than the table
suggests.
