Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, looks forward to a shot at county honours for Danny Greaves' side
It’s cup final night on Wednesday as the Scarlet Runners take a break from their league struggles and focus attention on lifting silverware instead.
Twerton Park will be a familiar venue for Danny Greaves’ charges as they take on National League South play-off contenders Weston-super-Mare with both sides looking to lift the Somerset Premier Cup for a FIFTH time.

Frome’s initial success came in 1967 with a victory over two legs against Yeovil Town and it was the same opponents with whom they shared the trophy a couple of years later.
1983 brought a comprehensive 6-1 aggregate victory over Taunton Town but they had to wait over a quarter of a century for their next triumph, by which time the competition had reverted to a one-off final, defeating old foes Paulton Rovers 3-1 at the West Clewes home of Welton Rovers in 2009.
The only final they have lost came five years later when Taunton won by the only goal of a game played at Paulton while Weston’s four Premier Cup triumphs have all come in the 2010s, and most recently in 2019.
Saturday’s 4-2 victory at Hornchurch leaves the Seagulls in the thick of the National League South play-off race, maintaining an impressive away record which is the best in the Division. They were top of the tree back in November, but a long run of indifferent results at home (one win in the last eleven) has seen them slip to eighth spot.
Frome and Weston last played each other as equals in the Western League as long ago as the early 90s, but met competitively as recently as the 2021-22 campaign when they were drawn together in two cup competitions, both times at the Optima Stadium.
The Seagulls came out on top by the odd goal in five in a Southern League Challenge Cup tie before the tables were turned four months later when late goals from James Ollis and Rex Mannings edged a Premier Cup quarter-final 2-1.
The respective paths to the final:
Frome Town Weston-super-Mare
Brislington (a) W 4-1 First Round Keynsham (H) W 8–0
Bath City (a) W 2-0 Second Round Yeovil (a) W 1–0
Mendip Broadwalk (H) W 3–0 Quarter-Final Taunton (H) W 2–1
Paulton Rovers (a) W 3–1 Semi-Final Clevedon (a) W 2–0
Should Wednesday’s clash end all square after ninety minutes, there will be no extra time, the contest will go straight to a penalty shoot-out.
Some may say it’s ‘only’ the Somerset Premier Cup, but Frome’s past triumphs were much-celebrated and a positive outcome at Twerton Park could galvanise them into the form needed between now and the end of the month to ensure Premier Division survival.
The latest information on ticketing (according to the Somerset FA) can be bought on the gate at Twerton Park is as follows:
