Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, counts down the days until our crucial home game with the Citizens.
Badgers Hill stages a big basement battle on Saturday when bottom-but-one Frome Town
take on bottom-but-three Winchester City.
Apart from the slip-up at Merthyr, the Scarlet Runners’ much improved form over the past
six weeks or so has given their followers enough hope that they can extricate themselves
from their perilous position but, sooner rather than later, those battling draws must turn into
wins.
Like Frome, the Citizens suffered stoppage-time heartbreak last week as a late, late penalty
deprived them of all three points in a 1-1 draw at Hanwell, stretching their own disappointing
run to just one league win in the last ten.
In contrast, they have been busy in the cups, hosting Isthmian South East outfit
Sittingbourne next week in the Second Round of the Trophy to go along with a decent run in
the FA Cup which ended in replay defeat at Weymouth.
Their last visit to The Hill was three years ago, almost to the day, when second half strikes
from Marcus Mapstone and Matt Smith enabled the Robins to triumph 2-0 in front of a crowd of
362. Winchester would have the last laugh, however, later winning promotion via the play-
offs to Premier Division South by overcoming Bristol Manor Farm, something Frome failed to
do in that galling semi-final.
This is their fourth (and by far longest) stint in the Southern League, gaining promotion from
the Wessex League in 2015 and their last two campaigns at Step Three have brought 16th
and 11th place finishes.
Recent encounters against the Citizens:
Season Competition Home Away
2018-19 FA Cup D 1 – 1 L 1 – 2 (aet)
2019-20 SL Div 1 South W 2 – 0 Covid
2020-21 SL Div 1 South Covid Covid
2021-22 SL Div 1 South W 2 – 0 D 0 – 0
While much recent attention has been focused on the signing of frontman Archie Ferris, it is
the exploits off the bench of Curtis Hutson that have caught the eye. Three strikes in the last
four games, two of them within ten minutes of coming on, and if his long-range rasper at
Sholing last week doesn’t win November goal of the month, we are in for a treat.
This is a massive game for both sides and while a win wouldn’t quite lift the Robins out of
the drop zone, breaking that Badgers Hill duck would provide a huge boost for the task
ahead. It will not be easy, and the twelfth man could play a major part.

Thank you The Jupster,
There are some very important games this Saturday in the ‘Drop Zone,’ apart from ours. Things will change whatever happens. We could be one point away from getting out of the bottom four or we could even be rock bottom!
Plymouth play Marlow and just above the drop zone Tiverton play Hanwell & Hungerford play Walton.
Note that next week’s away game at Hanwell is postponed as they are still in the FA Trophy.
See you all at ‘The Hill.’ It’s going to be ‘dog fighting-esque.’ I'm not expecting a pretty game!
