Gloucester City 2 - 0 Frome Town

Frome Town fell to defeat at the hands of league leaders Gloucester City.

It was a rainy evening in Gloucestershire, with the weather rather matching the result, as goals from Jaydn Crosbie and Dayle Grubb in each half, kept the Tigers 100% home league record intact.

The Robins were outclassed on the day, but certainly not embarrassed giving everything until the last kick of the game.

There were two forced changes to the line-up, as Warren Maidment and Rex Mannings both missed out due to injuries. Sam Teale returned to the side and Zak Drew took up the right winger spot.

As expected the home side controlled the opening 15 minutes with a plethora of possession but the visitors did well to contain them for the most part.

Their first big chance came in the 20th minute as King Baidoo broke through the middle. His shot looked destined for the back of the net but cannoned off the inside of the post and out, before being cleared.

The BA11 outfit, didn’t have much joy in attack in the first half, though Drew managed to pick up a loose ball and drive forward, laying off to George Rigg, he fired an effort from some distance out that was comfortably held by Jared Thompson.

Just five minutes before half time, fortune went the way of the hosts, after a good bit of play, Crosbie found himself in down the right, his initial shot was saved by Phillips, but the rebound cannoned back off of him and trickled in to the corner.

Trailing at the break, it certainly made it interesting as to how Danny Greaves would set his side up to attack the second half and attack it they did, with the first 15 or so minutes, being played in Gloucester’s half, with a few chances flashing across goal but no success.

Frome’s big chance came in the 50th minute, with a ball being drilled across the box, it reached Joe O’Loughlin at the back post but he couldn’t convert past Thompson, who was out quickly to make a crucial save.

Against these top sides, when you do get these chances you simply have to take them as you may not get another one, Frome have been guilty of this all season, having scored just 5 goals in eleven league games, and will have rued that missed chance even further when Grubb’s effort in the 65th minute, deflected perfectly in to the top corner and from there on, getting anything from the game was a big ask.

Gloucester did a good job at not giving Frome a sniff and the game went completely flat. Substitute Marcus Day, tried to ignite a spark with a mazy run in added time, but his shot off the back of it was dragged well wide.

The hosts were deserving of their three points, but Frome gave a good account of themselves and with a bit more luck it would have made it more interesting, against a side who will likely be up there come the end of the season.

Next up is Poole Town at home-another tough test but one we’ll be more than ready for and we’ll need another big crowd to push the lads on.
