Poole Town vs. Frome Town: Preview and Ticket Info

Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, looks ahead to a return clash on the coast.

What a difference a few days make as a combination of that fabulous performance and victory at Hanwell coupled with a fresh face on the board has brought the feel-good factor back to Badgers Hill!

The Robins are, however, still bottom of the table, but go into Saturday’s encounter at the BlackGold Stadium with Poole Town in good heart knowing that another positive outcome could close the gap between themselves and safety.

The sides met only seven weeks ago when Matt Wood’s 90th minute header looked to have clinched a deserved draw in a cracking contest only for the Dolphins to nick it 3-2 with a last-gasp winner.

Since that dramatic afternoon, both teams have played half a dozen Southern League matches, and it may surprise a few that Poole have picked-up fewer points in those fixtures than the Scarlet Runners, slipping from play-off contention to a more modest twelfth place.

Frome have a pretty poor recent record at the Tatnam Ground, having lost there six times running since a 3-1 FA Cup Second Qualifying Round success in 2008 against a Poole side whose line-up included a certain Charlie Austin up front. Whatever happened to him?

Recent away encounters with Poole

Season                 Competition                  Result

2008-09              FA Cup                           W  3 – 1

2013-14                FA Trophy replay          L 1 – 3

2013-14                Southern Prem             L    2 – 4

2014-15                Southern Prem             L    0 – 7

2015-16                Southern Prem             L    0 – 5

2018-19                FA Trophy                        L    1 – 2

2018-19                Southern Prem South     L    0 – 3

A grim sequence of results indeed but another grim run of sixteen Premier Division South games without a win came to an end at Hanwell on Tuesday (thanks in part to James Ollis notching his SIXTIETH goal for the club) and a similar level of performance on the Dorset coast will give Danny Greaves’ charges every chance of a decent result.

Nice one Juppy. Charlie Austin is now of course playing for our favourite local rivals Totten. At 35 he's had a wonderful career. Scoring over 300 goals, playing in the premiership for QPR, Southampton & WBA. He was in two England squads but failed to get a game. He scored 64 goals for Poole in just 57 games. He played for Hungerford before that.

Poole were extremely lucky to win 3-2 at the Hill in the dying seconds. but look vulnerable at present, so we have a chance for sure.

The recent win has lifted spirits but there's still a distance to go and many difficult games to negotiate. Plus, our rivals are winning or picking up points too …

I remember that game in 2008 very well, but my match report tells how well Charlie Austin must have played, because I didn't mention him once, in fact, it was only in later years when I looked back at the teams on the report and noticed that he had actually been playing.

Mind you, he was playing against a Premiership standard centre back Jamie Cheseman who must have kept him quiet all match :)
