We wish Sam all the best and thank him for all the memories!
We are disappointed to announce that striker Sam Meakes will not be returning to the club next season.
Sam is studying at Bath University, but will be returning to his home in the South East to complete a year of work experience, and will continue playing his football closer to home. He plans to return to the West Country next summer ahead of his final year and we will look forward to welcoming him back to the club then.
Sam was signed in February 2023 and has appeared 52 times for the Robins. Last season, he made a significant impression with 9 goals in 39 outings, leading the line and scoring against both Worthing and Torquay during our fabulous FA Trophy run.
Manager Danny Greaves said of his departing striker: "We always knew the situation with Sam and selfishly, we were hoping he'd find work experience in the south west. Unfortunately and understandably that is not the case. We thank Sam for his efforts over the course of the past 18 months as he has contributed hugely to our success."
"He is going to be a top number 9 - I have no doubt about and you just know when someone has that in them. You can judge on natural ability to make the right runs and arrive in the right spaces and Meakesy has that in spades. Somebody is going to benefit by having him for the season, but, with another year of football under his belt, we will look forward to welcoming back a more rounded and experienced player and we must take the positives from the situation.”
A huge thank-you from all at the club to Sam. Best of luck with the year in industry and, of course, your football!
