Danny Greaves gives his thoughts on the squad-building process as we bid farewell to our No.9.
We are disappointed to announce Kane Simpson has decided to reject our offer to stay at the club for another season and will leave to take up an opportunity elsewhere.
Upon the departure of the striker who scored nineteen goals last season, Danny Greaves says: "I am clearly disappointed to lose Kane. We brought him back to the club early on in the last campaign and we knew he would have a significant impact in our quest for promotion. He did exactly that, and we thank him for his efforts and contribution in helping us back into the Southern Premier."
The manager went on to give a further update on his squad as pre-season approaches: "I always knew Step 3 would be a huge jump up in every sense. I have spoken to a number of managers to get a deeper understanding of the level and everyone tells me how tough and demanding the league is. We know this well from our previous experiences. You have to be on top form every minute to have a chance of winning any game. You only have to look at some of the names we will be facing to see the challenge we face. The budgets and figures are huge, and we just can't compete in that sense."
"What we can do is box clever with regards our recruitment, and, rest assured, we will! We will not put this club in financial difficulties like we have seen from many clubs chasing success. We will undoubtedly have one of, if not the, lowest budgets in the league, but we have seen many examples where that does not determine your season. Likewise, deep pockets do not guarantee instant success. I am not complaining by any means - it's all part of the challenge, one which an ambitious club like ours must embrace."
"My main priority this summer was to keep the group who led us to promotion success. I have now met all players individually and outlined our plans. Kane has moved on, one other is unsure about his personal circumstances and whether he will be in the area, so we are waiting on that one. But all the other conversations have been extremely positive and the group have bought into how we think we can overcome the financial gap."
"There will likely be some small changes to how we work during the week and prepare individually and collectively to ensure we still have successful season. Some of our players have received interest from rivals clubs. That is only natural after the season we have just had. Let's not take it for granted that we have some top players capable of playing in Step 3 and above - re-signing some of those players who have received better offers elsewhere should be seen as a hugely significant and important business."
"As well as retention, we have identified a few key areas where we might be able to improve, and we have been very selective in terms of potential targets. Some of those have been ruled out immediately due to wages demands which we just cannot get close to, but we are still in discussions with a couple whom we feel would strengthen the group. I want to stress that I am confident the group who led us to promotion can compete at the level and sure that we will surprise a few people. But we are ambitious and do not want to stand still, so a new face or two will help us on this journey. We have to do it in a sustainable way. So far, we have verbally agreed with a new player, and there have been advanced discussions with another couple of targets, so hopefully at least one of those will come off."
"We hope to announce our retentions and any new signings in the coming weeks."

So there you have it - we can look forward to seeing Kane play at 'The Hill' next season!
Merthyr finished last season 0ne point from the play offs. They get gates of over 800 and have a nice old ground with a 3,000- 4,000 capacity. They have played as high as the Conference at their peak. Good luck Kane.
