Frome town women were back in league action away to Penmill ladies of Yeovil but the game nearly fell foul to torrential rain half an hour before kickoff leaving a very saturated heavy going pitch. Frome lined up with a depleted bare 11 squad due to 3 or 4 absentee’s but started the game on the front foot taking the game to Penmill with Underhill and Porch looking a threat up front with the later testing the home keeper early doors. Moving through the first half it became more of a physical battle with the whole midfield putting in a shift on a difficult surface and the back four competing well to keep Penmill at bay. With half time in site Justin was starting to plan for the 2nd half but Penmill took the lead with a strong header at the back post from a Penmill corner and then things got worse for Frome in added time when a rare Perkins mistake took the ball away from the hands of Restorick in goal leaving the Penmill number 5 to profit and send Penmill into the break 2 up.
Frome came out for the 2nd half with the wind behind them eager to get an early goal and forced Penmill back into their own half for the 1st 15 mins but couldn’t find a way through a strong looking Penmill defence happy to put the ball into touch forcing good work from Steve running the line and spritely ball boy Adrian to keep the game flowing. Frome’s best chances came from set pieces that saw Underhill deliver into the busy Penmill box but the ball just wouldn’t fall kindly for Frome to find the net. Frome restricted Penmill to a few break away efforts and switched to 3 at the back for the last 10 mins but unfortunately it wasn’t to be Frome’s day, still a great effort by the whole team some playing with injuries and out of position but 2 nil was the final score.
Frome’s travelling supporters voted player of the match to Mary Brant who battled and tackled well throughout a solid defensive display taking a fair few knocks for her troubles. Next week Frome look to bounce back in another tough away fixture against Sherborne Town.
